Although pirates have been around for centuries, most of us think of the Caribbean style pirate when picking out a Halloween Pirate Costume. The Caribbean Pirates have loomed large in literature, movies and music as men with peg legs, parrots and buried treasure. In reality, a pirate's life was more complex than just wearing cool eye patches, gold earrings and, on a good day, forcing someone to walk the plank. There were shipmates to feed and keep happy, treasure to steal/bury, and a load of good guys trying to catch them and put them out of business.During the Golden Age of Pirates in the Caribbean, in the late 17th century and early 18th century, a number of legendary pirates roamed the open seas. One of the most well known and feared pirates was Blackbeard (or Edward Leach, as he was known by his mum). Blackbeard often wore a big feathered tricorn, and always had multiple swords, knives, and pistols at his disposal. Sweet! The Blackbeard Pirate Costume continues to be a very popular Halloween pirate costume. Add a tricorn hat, huge black beard and multiple weapons to your standard pirate costume and you can transform yourself to the infamous Blackbeard the Pirate!
Another flamboyent and colorful pirate was Calico Jack (or John Rackham to his closest friends). He is most remembered for two things: (1) the design of the Jolly Roger flag, seen at left and usually somewhere on the full blown Pirate Costume; and (2) employing two of the most notorious female pirates of the age as part of his crew, Mary Read and Anne Bonny (who Calico Jack stole away from her husband). (Did Mr. Bonny really miss her...I mean, how easy could she have been to live with?)
A favorite pirate costume for couples where the man dresses as the flashy Captain Jack and the woman chooses a pirate costume befitting the likes of Mary or Anne. Most of the pirates from this era enjoyed years of pillaging before eventually being caught and punished for their crimes (often by walking their own planks or hanging from their own ship's mast). On the brighter side, no one can argue that they wore cool duds and seemed to have a lot of fun! Sure, they were a little rough around the edges, drank too much, smoked harsh tobacco and fought all the time...but that kinda sounds like fun (at least for one night a year). So, take off that business suit, drop that TV guide, get out of that school uniform and spend Halloween night wearing a Pirate Costume. Aargh!
